This powerful and critically acclaimed film follows the Shepard family through five
years of struggle, hardship and bittersweet success in raising their child, Hannah,
who was diagnosed with autism.
It offers tremendous insight into the stress families and educators face as they tackle this mysterious disorder, while giving hope and inspiration to those who are determined to bring their children out from behind the glass door of autism.
After a great deal of research into available therapies, the Shepherds decided
on an “applied behavioral analysis” treatment program, a controversial method involving
intrusive one-on-one therapy for thirty-six hours a week.
Their struggle to pull Hannah into the real world was shared by her three older sisters as well, and supported by a compassionate and committed array of teachers and caregivers. Hannah was two when her family embarked upon this intensive program of therapy. Five years later, she has celebrated her seventh birthday and is a first grade student in public school. This documentary records her amazing progress over the past five years, and is a tribute to the power of hope, love and determination on the part of all those involved.
